One whole year.
A year ago today, I lost my stepdad to cancer, but he won: he is in the presence of Jesus. My parents remarried their significant others when I was itty bitty and I don't remember life without them. More than anything I want him back. Grief is just the price we pay for love. For the first time since he passed, I searched through my old email correspondence with him. I was in giggle fits to find this was the last email I received from him:
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare... You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Ever since my high school we had a running joke of "don't eat too much." To let you in on the funny, it was my senior prom and after pictures at my parents house, our parents were sending my friend group off with well wishes. They were yelling goodbyes like "have fun" "be safe" and so on. Not to be outdone, my stepdad yells "BLC, don't eat too much." I remember him being mortified, my mom elbowing him, and everyone laughing. I still think its just as funny as I did that day. After all, laughter is the best medicine. Xoxo-BLC
PS: I really appreciate the kind words you shared last year. Donna reminded me last year that Christmas in heaven and celebrating Jesus's birth with him is far better than year (you can read her comment here). It helped me focus on his win, not our loss. In the past year, I can think of a friend who lost a parent, a friend who lost a sibling, and friend who lost a child. Being comforted by you helped me comfort them.
PSS: I wrote this post about grief: "Good Grief." If you struggle with grief it might help you a little too. :)

Mrs. TCSK and Her Mister: Gift Guide
When people find out I have this little blog, they always ask what I blog about. And I happily respond: ME!!! I confessed that in my very first post ever: the purpose of this blog is completely selfish. It's my happies, my colorful life, the company I keep, and wearing it all well. Selfish, selfish, selfish. So, not to break my selfish stride, here is my Mrs. TCSK wishlist:
faux fur or vintage/recycled cropped fur coat, sparkly flats by Pretty Ballerinas,
k.slademade clutch, and pashminas (one could never have too many, right!?!).
At the risk of being too selfish, I must include what I believe my mister is coveting.
After all, he makes me happy, makes my life much more colorful,
is the best company I keep, and I always wear it well with him by my side.

Her Mister: mounted stuffed animal, Filson jacket, a shotgun,
Scotch, a hunting club membership, and a subscription to Garden & Gun.
Dish: what are YOU wishing, hoping, and praying for this year!?!
May all your wants, wishes, and dreams come true. Xoxo-BLC

TCSK Minnies: Gift Guide
It's the most wonderful time of year and to spread the cheer, what better way than gifts for everyone!?!
Let's start with those who are most excited about Christmastime: MINNIES!!!
Girls first: Ashley Brooke Designs "thank you" stationary, pink
chewbeads, Little Lilly shift, bows bows bows, and a Tiffany baby rattle.
Boys: Jon Jons, blue chewbeads, Tiffany piggy bank,
and Dr. Seuss's "Oh, the Places You'll Go"!!!
I am at that fun age where friends are still getting married and others are having babies. The kid-world is still foreign to moi, but these are my most favorite gifts to give babies, minnies, moms-to-be, and new mamas.
Do share: where to do snag the perfect minnie gift!?! Happy shopping to you and yours for those special minnies in your life!!! Xoxo-BLC
PS: I do believe these gifts would be good for minnies orrrr that tough-to-buy for person on your list: a zoo membership, membership to the local art museum, Kiva Card (an ah-mazing gift!!!), Adopt a Whale (or your exotic animal of choice), or give a sheep, chicken, goat, or duck through World Vision!!!

Cookie Monster
For as long as I can remember, one of my favorite past times is making cookies with my sweet madre.
From rolling out the dough to watching the oven bake to frosting with care to
shake-shake-shaking the color sugars, it is just sooo much fun!!!
This year we gave out "best cookie awards." The winners are: the colorful snowman,
the cowboy stocking, the well-decorated Christmas tree ...
... and my personal favorite: the sunburnt snowman!!! Isn't he hip with his sunnies!?!
Mmm!!! Cookies just taste better at Christmastime. Have you made your favorite sweet treat this holiday? The real question: to share or not to share! Hehee. Xoxo-BLC

Orange you glad!?! I AM!!!
There are NO WORDS to express my excitement: Clemson won the ACC Championship!!!
I am beyond proud of my Tigers ... and I am BEYOND excited to go to MIAMI!!!
We tailgated with the best of 'em: it included a white table cloth, DJ,
and tons of college chums. Oh la la was it FUN running into all those Clemson chums!!!
Isn't the sunset stunning!?! All I see is purple and orange. :)
I needed a rest-break hiking up to our seats.
I claim it was because of the "altitude" and not because I might be out of shape.
And BRRR was it chilly so high up, but just LOOK at that view of the field!!!
We couldn't stop smiling ear to ear!!! Miami here we come.
I couldn't stop giggling at all the fans throwing oranges on the field.
Fingers crossed we can win the Orange Bowl!!!
Let's GOOO TIGERS!!! Xoxo-BLC

"I had a little shoe tree, nothing would bear
But Manolo Blahniks and vintage Taittinger
The Queen of Style, Ms. Wintour, came to see me
And wrote a piece in Vogue about my shoe tree."

Get Carded
I just adore correspondence. Whether sending or receiving, I swoon over darling pictures, clever wording, and the creativity each card brings. I should really buy stock in Hallmark!!!
As promised, we mailed our Christmas cards this weekend and here is what we mailed. I couldn't help myself: I little Clemson theme just might have been my inspiration. I resisted writing "GO TIGERS" ...
I also send out a few Robin Hood Foundation cards to support their cause: poverty in New York City. Ghandi said it best: "Poverty is the worst form of violence." We can all help fight poverty this Christmas by donating food/clothing/money, volunteering at a local soup kitchen, praying for those in need ... be a creative: there are a million ways to lend a helping hand. Without further ado, from my family to yours ... wishing you a very Merry Christmas in cards!!!

If you can't beat 'em ...
If you can't beat 'em, then join 'em!!! My husband loves to hunt and so do I ... deals and steals at shops that is. He has accompanied me on countless shopping expeditions so I figured it was time to see what all the hunting fuss was about. We shot skeet and oh la la was it fun!!! The best part: no animals where hurt. Phew!!!
I must say: a shotgun is heavier, louder, and kicks more than I ever anticipated. Plus, those clay bits move rather fast. I only hit the clay skeet one time ... and my precious sister-in-law caught it all on video. How cute is she squealing with delight!?! Many thanks to my husband and father-in-law for all their patience and willingness to let the girls the play. Until next time, PULL!!! Xoxo-BLC

Happy PINK Friday!!!
Yesterday, I hope you ate like no one was watching. I did!!!
Today, I hope you shop like the bill isn't coming. I definitely will!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!!
Happy Thanksgiving Day to you and yours!!! It is time to give thanks and be glad it in. I am very thankful for a wonderful family, entertaining friends, and good times. Our family celebration requires tryptophan hangovers and breaking out the fat pants. I had my cake (and turkey, and pie, and stuffing) and ate it too!!! Time to run in a Turkey Trot, watch the Macy's Parade, and, of course eat, drink, and be merry. What are you thankful for today??? Enjoy!!! Xoxo-BLC
PS: I am also thankful for TCSK and all her readers --- YOU!!! Tomorrow is TCSK's third birthday. Let's celebrate!!! :)

Thanksgiving Thinspiration
Over-indulge at Thanksgiving? Me? I would never ...
Just as a precautionary measure, a little pre-Thanksmas thinspiration is in order.
I think I can manage Mary Phillips balanced diet!!!
I am going to keep the fat pants close by, just in case. :)

Oh what a week ...
Oh what a week it has been!!! Here is the run-down:
Monday: I am on council for a local Kappa Delta chapter and they graciously invited me to a dinner at their house in honor of their new college president. It was such a wonderful night and I was so touched to be included. These girls consistently blow me away and I think the new college president felt the same.
Tuesday: My childhood best friend had her baby girl!!! She is perfection and I love her to pieces. Also, my college chum and fellow KD sorority sister that I bumped into in Greece happened to be in my town for the evening. I was thrilled to have her stay with us --- I cooked dindin (a small feat for moi) and we poured over her ah-mazing photographs from her trip. Such a blessing to have her visit us and fingers crossed our paths cross again soon!!!
Wednesday: I did my first gig as a big-girl-attorney: I attended a deposition in the place of an attorney at my firm. Don't get too excited: I was instructed not to say anything. Ha! When I arrived, I told the receptionist I was there for the deposition and she told me: "Let me know when your attorney gets here and I'll take you back to the conference room." When I told her that I was the attorney, she took me to the conference room and then the court reporter told me my raincoat was pretty. It was my suit jacket, but whatever.
Sidebar: I think I failed to formally mention: I PASSED THE BAR EXAM!!! I'm still jumping for joy. I'm so joyful about it, I signed up to take other state's bar upon my firms request (ughhh). Fingers crossed lightening strikes twice and I can pass it again!!!
Winesday (@blairsheadband informed me this is a different, more fun day than Wednesday): Since I had to travel to the land of The Pink Pelican for my deposition, I took my pretty-raincoat-suit-jacket self by for a visit of their new store. It is TDF!!! It's easy peasy to find, the shopgirls could not be more friendly, and the shopping is more than fun. It's a must see if you are in their neck of the woods. I wouldn't have ever left, but I had dinner plans with A. Liz Adventures!!! She is the best --- all smiles and just a bundle of fun. She taught me all about the 21st century: apps, words with friends, etc. I cannot wait to squeeze her again soon!!!
Thursday: It's my first day ever in court alone!!! I was so excited/nervous/pumped I can't stand it. I get to the courthouse an hour away only to have my client fail to appear. I didn't make it out of the courthouse before I teared up. Oh dear!!! Don't fret: I went back to court that afternoon on another case and my client did appear. The hearing went smooth as butter. Phew!!! Needless to say, my standing Thursday night plans with the girls was much needed.
Saturday: My dad called me before Clemson halftime and asked me if we needed grief counseling for the Clemson v. NC State game. I'd like to change my answer to YES!!! Lord have mercy. If we loose, I prefer to loose to a family members alma mater and we did just that: my NC-State-grad-sister is thrilled to pieces. Our local TV station even pulled the game before our fourth quarter. Ouch!!! I'm keeping the faith ... but still not buying any plane tickets Miami just yet!!!
So there you have it: what a week!?! Xoxo-BLC

If I Die Young
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh, uh oh
Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I've had, just enough time
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I've had just enough time
And I'll be wearing white when I come into Your Kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I've never known the loving of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holdin' my hand
there's a boy here in town says that he'll love me forever
Whoever thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life oh Well,
I've had just enough time
So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
what I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts,
Oh no,
I'll sell em' for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
and maybe then you'll hear the words I've been singing
funny when you're dead how people start listenin'
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save them for a time when you're really gonna need 'em, oh
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I've had just enough time
So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

I just love this song "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry for so many reasons. One of which, I believe the same as Kimberly Perry said about this song: "We really have gotten to live and love at our young ages. 'If I Die Young,' for us, is about if it all ends at this moment, look at what we've gotten to do. Whatever time we're given will be absolutely enough as long as we make the most of it." I am certain of my salvation in Jesus and I believe heaven is better than paradise. I am looking forward to seeing my loved ones, here and there, all together again in the presence of God. Regardless of when I die, don't fret or be sad: I have lived a colorful, happy, fun-filled, and fulfilling life that was more than enough!!! Xoxo-BLC
PS: A very big congratulations to The Band Perry for winning best new artist, single of the year, and song of the year at the County Music Awards!!! You deserve it and so much more.

This Is So Clutch
You know what is so clutch!?! k.slademade. She hands down has the best clutches ever. I prefer clutches to handbags and finding good, quality clutches is tough stuff. k.slademade is now my one-stop-shop!!!
I carried the large pony leather clutch to the wedding yesterday. This color goes perfectly with black, brown, grey ... you name it. My husband couldn't stop complimenting the clutch. My husband appreciating fashion!?! YES PULEAZE!!!
I couldn't just pick one clutch from her fabulous line and my other choice was the true navy. Tis rather though to find a navy clutch and I just love this one to pieces!!! As you can see, the clutches can stay small or expand due to their fold-over style. I simply adore this entire line!!! My next k.slademade purchase is sure to be one from her tribal collection. TDF!!! Xoxo-BLC

Who, What, Wed
Our Fall has been FILLED with weddings and I just love it. My husband on the other
hand is being the best sport ever as this wedding season interrupts his football season.
Below I managed to wiggle inbetween the bride and groom.
Maggie Mayd, the bride, wore her hair down for the ceremony ...
... and up for the reception in the most fabulous top knot!!!
During dindin, I sat next to The Sweet Life and That's so Michelle, both fabulous bloggers.
It was so fun chit chatting with those two and I am their newest followers.
Maggie Mayd and I went to college together. She was one of my very first friends.
She is just the best and I had the best time with all our college chums.
I have absolutely no idea what we are doing above ...
... but the picture had me tickled to pieces and it's too funny not to share.
Cheers to Maggie Mayd's love, laughter, and happily ever after.

PS: I am carrying a clutch by k.slademade (more details to come) and a necklace by Noble House Designs (I doubled it up with pearls thanks to Rhianna for the idea)!!!

To all veterans, your sacrifice does not go unnoticed nor will we ever ever ever forget your bravery and commitment to our country. Join me and attend a ceremony, parade, or say a prayer to celebrate our veterans!!! Xoxo-BLC11.10.2011
Happy Birthday to Queen of the Jungle!!!
Two of my most favorite people are celebrating birthdays today: my childhood best friend and Lilly Pulitzer, the Queen of the Jungle herself!!! If I could pick to meet one person in the whole world, it would be Lilly.
I imagine her to be just like Janie Schoenborn, the talented LP design director, eloquently described the ultimate Lilly Pulitzer woman: "She is confident and loves color. She is independent and loves to stand out in her Lilly. She has style and is really chic. It's the woman you want to sit next to at a dinner party."
Lilly's birthday is just in time for Resort which is TDF. I am loving this year's theme of Jungle Glam!!! Wishing my bestie and Mrs. Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau, the very best birthdays!!! Enjoy your day and eats lots and lots and lots of cake. Xoxo-BLC
PS: I sooo wish I could attend her big birthday bash in Palm Beach!!! If you went, make me green with envy and spill already ... was it TDF!?! :)

Happy (early) Blogiversary TCSK!!! {G-I-V-E-A-W-A-Y}
Happy (early) Blogiversary TCSK!!! She doesn't look a day over three years old, does she!?! It's hard to believe, but time flies when you are having fun, and it's be t-h-r-e-e years this month. I started this blog in my first year of law school as a creative outlet (and if Lilly Pulitzer had a blog, I wanted one too!!!) and oh la la has it been fun fun fun. I cherish all my readers and friends I have made here at TCSK. Without further ado, I think this occasion calls for a little g-i-v-e-a-w-a-y, don't you!?! This week is Lilly Pulitzer's birthday and I find it rather appropriate to giveaway a pair of Lilly Pulitzer resort earrings. The options: seahorses, frogs, white coral, or pink tomato coral. The winner picks their favorite pair!!! The coral pair are my favorite and I already add 'em to my collection. To enter to win: leave a comment on this post. If you do not have a blog, please leave your email or twitter handle. For extra entries, tweet/blog/facebook about it and/or follow this little blog and/or like TCSK on Facebook. Leave a comment for each entry (one comment = one entry, six comments = six entries). The winner will be announced on November 21st. Chin chin to the past three years and many more to come!!! My invitation arrived in the mail this week and I am itching to go.
Mark your calendars for December 9th and 10th. Note the new location (Adventures of a Southern Newlywed and I were chit chatting about this on twitter and we wish it was further south ... like in Charlotte or Palm Beach, but it's still KoP). I had the best time this last Spring and highly recommend all Lilly Lovers make the trip. It is sooo much fun being in a massive room surrounded by loads of Lilly and in the company of other Lilly Lovers. So, are you tickled pink to be going??? If so, make me greenwith envy!!! Xoxo-BLC

Let's Get Social!!!
Let's get social, shall we!?! I recently created a The Company She Keeps facebook page. It's a great way for me to keep you up-to-date, share pictures, and just stay in touch. Make my day by hitting that "like" button!!!
I also keep an ongoing closet sale at TCSK II (http://theclothesshekept.blogspot.com/). Visit her for my recent bad decisions, i.e. those purchases that I just had to have ... even when too small, too big, or too glamorous for the life I lead. I just added a whole bunch of loot, even a purse from Greece!!!
As of recent, I have been receiving a lot of emails, tweets, and comments asking about where this or that is from. Should I blog more about what I am wearing or where I shop!?! Feel free to send me emails and I will give explicit responses. To answer the mass questions, the dress I wore to the first Clemson game is Lilly circa 2008, the white tunic I am wearing in my Greece pictures is a one of a kind from Greece, and the big turquoise tote is also a Greece purchase. I added a similar purse to TCSK II so be sure and take a look!!!
Last, but not least, I do tweet almost daily about this, that, and the other. My handle is @TCSKxoxo so join me and I'd love to keep up with you too!!! I really like twitter #i♥twitter. My mom, husband, sister-in-law, college besties, blog bffs, and so on are ALL on twitter. Don't be square ... join the fun and let's get social!!! Xoxo-BLC

I could not just pick one necklace because let's face it: how could you pick just one!?!
Picking three was tough enough. The entire Noble House Designs line is d-i-v-i-n-e!!!
The trio arrived Thursday evening and I haven't stopped wearing 'em.
I have followed SLN's Noble House Design's blog for quite some time and
oh-la-laaa is she fun to follow!!! From her travels to her style to her decorating dos,
I am a huge fan of it all. Here is how she perfectly describes herself ...
"I find inspiration in the splendor things: traveling to exotic destinations and exploring new cultures; anything of tribal design; surrounding yourself with good people; animals - especially rescue dogs & cats; vintage 1970s/West Palm Beach era; great books and fashion magazines; Color, Color and more Color; Decorating your house beautifully, but on a budget; Slim Aarons - my favorite artist/photographer and last but not least....Garage Sales, Estate Sales and Craigslist!!" I couldn't agree more with SLN!!! I find the Noble House Designs collection to be fun, chic, effortless, and comfortable (definitely not too heavy for all-day-wear). Even the sparkly, magnetic clasps in the back are too cute for words. Swoon!!! I ♥ Noble House Designs, don't you!?! Xoxo-BLC
PS: Rhianna of Romeo asked if these are one necklace or multiples. Each picture is one necklace that closes with one clasp. But wouldn't it be fun to layer them together or with pearls!?! :)
