Love & Law School

Eons ago the sweet Bernadette from Making Stuff and Doing Things asked this: tips for "how to date a 1L?" The tipsters: my law school bffs -- Jacqueline and Coco -- Ale, and myself. 1. Law school is alllll consuming. You'll hear allllll about it. 2. Know it will be okay. It's tough, but 100% worth it. 3. Make each other a priority and spend time together. Skype counts! 4. Love is worth fighting for ... don't let the law win! Calling all legalesers, do you have any 1L dating tips!? Good luck B!!! You are on board for a great ride! Xoxo-BLC

  1. Just be understanding about the work load. Also, he will probably complain about school and the worst response (at least in my book) is "It's going to be okay." A lot of times during 1L you feel like it WONT be okay, and you just want someone to sympathize, agree that it sucks, and distract you from school. Good luck!

  2. Be prepared for a lot of complaining? And probably a lot of sneering that you're "civilian" love can't possibly understand what you're going through.

Ha- I didn't speak to my now husband for 2 days after he told me to "suck it up" while studying for 6 exams 2L winter. Those words did not go over well. Hee.

  4. BF and I just graduated law school together and took the bar. And now, he's doing an LLM program in taxation at a really, really good law school. After three years of law school, I feel like I'm dating a 1L again, he's ALWAYS studying and freaking out.

Now, I should be more understanding than most dating a "1L" since I was one just a few years ago, but it's tough. So my tips:

    1. Patience is a virtue.

    2. School absolutely, always has to come first.

    3. Encouraging emails and cards in the mail are never a bad thing.

    4. Keep your chin up, there's month off at Christmas to look forward to!

  5. Never compare your own progress to that of your partner. If you're dating a fellow law student, it's better if s/he is in another section or different classes. If, like me, you attend law school long after your significant other graduated (summa cum laude), do not compete against his record.

  6. I think you just have to be as understanding as possible and realize that he is under a tremendous amount of pressure. It gets easier the farther you go along in law school, so I think the stress will ease up (at least until the Bar Exam).

Just try to understand that this is probably the hardest thing he will ever do and that he just needs your love and support!

  9. When your BF tells you he in in the library studying at 1am...don't think he is lying. He really is there studying. Honest. And he will probably be there for another hour!

  10. Aw, such a sweet quote. I hope LC feels the same about me. I have to work two jobs until I go back teaching b/c I don't make enough money to live and pay a student loan.

Tell your bf to stick with it. It's hard but will be worth it in the end.

  12. Thank you thank you thank for you for all these suggestions and kind words! I'm trying my best to be patient, but it's hard when our schedules mash; when I'm studying, he's has time to take a break; when I'm ready to take a break, he has to keep studying! As LawGirl mentioned....I just have to make it to Christmas!

    Keep the suggestions coming!

  13. Dating a 1L was one of the toughest things I have ever had to do, especially since my 1L was 8 hours away! Tons of internet and phone time, besides the two weeks before the big test, then there was minimal talk time! We thankfully made it through and are now on to 2L:) Good luck!!

  14. How about having a boyfriend who is student teaching while in a masters program. While you have class every day the day time and work till 1am...time apart = more time you want to be together!
